Xi Shuyan, Director of Elderly, Maternal and Child Health Service Department, Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning said that breastfeeding is critical to children’s health. Breastfeeding can accelerate postpartum recovery, reduce postpartum bleeding and lower the risk of mastadenoma and ovarian cancer for the mother. Human breast milk contains all the nutrients a 0-6 month old baby needs for growth and development and is easy to digest and absorb. Breastfeeding can prevent respiratory tract infections, allergies, diarrhea and other diseases for the baby and lower childhood obesity risk. It can promote child oral development and prevent malocclusion. Besides, it can enhance the relationship between the mother and the child, which is conducive to the child’s emotional development. In the first six months of the baby, the mother should stick with exclusive breastfeeding. When supplementary foods are added from the sixth month, the mother should at least stick with breastfeeding until the child reaches 2 years old. In order to effectively promote breastfeeding in Beijing, Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning will focus on the following aspects. Firstly, to strengthen baby-friendly service management. In 2013, in accordance with the requirements of WHO and UNICEF, the Commission took the initiative to conduct the review of baby-friendly hospitals and recognized 105 medical institutions as baby-friendly hospitals of Beijing. In 2015, to enlarge the scale of baby-friendly hospitals, the Commission made efforts to build specialized children hospitals into baby-friendly hospitals. Beijing Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital, capital Institute of Pediatrics and Jingdu Children’s Hospital passed the evaluation. In 2017, the Commission will launch the review of baby-friendly hospitals and a new round of construction of baby-friendly hospitals. To establish the new continuous management and comprehensive promotion mode to popularize baby-friendly services in hospitals, communities and families, the Commission has been carrying out the baby-friendly community construction work in the whole city, advocating and promoting breastfeeding in community health care institutions since 2013. At present, there are 288 baby-friendly communities in Beijing. This year, another 27 community health care centers are participating in the construction of baby-friendly communities, with the participation rate at above 90%. Secondly, to publicize breastfeeding. With electronic media, publicity boards and brochures, in baby-friendly hospitals efforts will be made to introduce the benefits of breastfeeding, Breastfeeding, Just 10 Steps! – The Baby Friendly Way and International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes issued by WHO and the 10 Measures to Promote Breastfeeding by the Hospital. Breastfeeding courses will be offered in pregnancy school to disseminate breastfeeding knowledge and skills. During the World Breastfeeding Week every year and other events, breastfeeding campaigns will be organized to create a good atmosphere for the whole society to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. Thirdly, to provide a supporting platform for breastfeeding. Breastfeeding counselling clinics in baby-friendly hospitals, breastfeeding counselling hotlines and Beijing Public Health and Family Planning Service Hotline (12320) and other means will be utilized to timely solve problems and questions about breastfeeding and improve the quality and accessibility of breastfeeding advisory services. Fourthly, to strengthen supervision and management.
