On November 30, Fang Laiying, Director General of Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, met with newly appointed WHO China Representative Dr. Michael John O’ Leary, Dr. Cris Tunon, Senior Program Officer and other mission members in Central Plaza, briefing the medical services and the influenza A (H1N1) containment conducted by the Beijing Municipal Government. Both sides discussed key areas for future cooperation. Yu Luming, Deputy Director General of Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, Cong Luoluo, Director General of Beijing Drug Administration and Zhao Jing, Director General of Beijing Municipal Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine also attended the meeting.
On behalf of Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, Director General Fang Laiying extended his welcome to the mission headed by Dr. Michael John O’ Leary and thanks to WHO for its long-term guidance and support for Beijing’s healthcare work. Mr. Fang briefed Beijing’s medical system, the key emphasis in their recent work, the H1N1 containment conducted by the Beijing Municipal Government and the latest progress in prevention, control and treatment of H1N1 with traditional Chinese medicine.
Dr. Michael John O’ Leary extended his thanks to Mr. Fang’s hospitality. He said that he was impressed by the H1N1 containment conducted by the Beijing Municipal Government and he believed that Beijing citizens would be under effective protection from H1N1 due to the positive and orderly prevention and control measures taken by the government.
Both sides also discussed issues of cooperation in the areas such as health improvement, tobacco control and Olympic legacy.
