"For a healthy life, for the prevention of HIV/AIDS, for the success of the Olympic Games, we are determined to study and disseminate knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention. Let us refuse drugs, preserve our moral integrity, cooperate with each other, love each other, lead healthy way of living and share healthy lives," swore Dong Jiong, former badminton world champion, with all present representatives of volunteers, to the society at the public commonweal campaign of "The 29th Olympics and HIV/AIDS Prevention ¨C Fluttering Red Ribbons", which was hosted by the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau on August 15.
The Beijing Olympic Games has begun, China has opened its gate to the world. During the 29th Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Beijing launched the campaign of "The 29th Olympics and HIV/AIDS Prevention ¨C Fluttering Red Ribbons" and seven effective measures have been taken: Firstly, 400,000 condoms have been provided at guest rooms of hotels throughout Beijing; secondly, 250,000 copies of HIV/AIDS Prevention Handbook have been distributed to the hotels designated by the BOCOG and some other big hotels; thirdly, the training of 10,000 volunteers for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games has been launched; fourthly, 180 university students and 500 community volunteers of the capital responsible for promoting AIDS prevention have been allocated in position; fifthly, citizens have been given free access to AIDS consultation and test; sixthly, 2 new methadone clinics have been founded; seventhly, an AIDS monitoring network has been spread throughout the city.
These measures are aimed at fulfilling the commitment given by the Chinese government and people to hold the "People's Olympics, Hi-tech Olympics and Green Olympics". We will take advantage of the important historic period to disseminate knowledge and strengthen AIDS prevention so that the spread of AIDS can be hampered and a "Great Wall" against AIDS can be built up.
This commonweal event was attended by heads of the General Administration of Sport, the Office of the State Council Working Committee for AIDS Prevention and Control, Beijing Administration of Sport and Beijing Tourism Administration; officers and experts from WHO, UNAIDS, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, International AIDS Society (IAS) and some other international organizations; leaders of health bureaus of 18 districts and counties; representatives of volunteers, hotels designated by the BOCOG and communities; former badminton world champion Dong Jiong; Ms. Liu Hui, a nurse from You'an Hospital and Olympic torch bearer, and so forth. Jin Dapeng, Party Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau, announced the 7 measures taken in Beijing during the 29th Olympics; government officials and guests presented copies of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Handbook and condoms to representatives of designated hotels, districts and counties; WHO Officer Mechai Viravaidya delivered an address, in which he highly praised the AIDS prevention work in Beijing; Liu Hui read out the proposal of "cherish your life, keep away from AIDS", which was signed by all attendants of the event.
It is reported that medical officers and public health staff launched a campaign with the subject "Safe Sex" at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. They distributed over 50 thousand condoms, which brought excellent results.
