As required by the BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad), the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau started building the Olympic medical statistics system (one of the 243 major Olympic projects) in 2006 for 23 hospitals (except emergency centers) designated by the BOCOG. In accordance with relevant standards approved by the IOC, this system enables the IOC, governments and BOCOG to easily analyze medical service usage statistics relating to highly important groups of people, such as the Olympic family members, media personnel, overseas audiences, etc., from various perspectives, taking into consideration the actual conditions of Beijing. It also helps the IOC, governments and BOCOG better grasp the situation of medical services during the Olympic Games and thus strongly supports the medical services. Last year, the successful trial in the ^Good luck, Beijing ̄ test events proved that the prototype system could provide accurate statistics and operate stably.
On August 7, the Beijing Public Health Publicity Center held an assessment meeting on the first trial of the statistics system and invited experts from the service division of the BOCOG to participate in the assessment. The experts listened to the introduction and report regarding the project and viewed the demonstration of the system. After careful discussion, they drew a conclusion that the statistics system operated stably at all the 23 designated hospitals in Beijing and basically satisfied the BMHB¨s need for statistics concerning the medical services at these hospitals. Besides, this system also achieved compatibility with the IOC medical encounter system. Therefore the experts unanimously passed the initial test of the statistics system.
The experts¨ approval for the system¨s initial test marked the beginning of the BMHB¨s work on its statistical support for medical services for the Olympic Games.
