Peking Union Medical College Hospital is the clinical medical school of China Union Medical University, and the clinical medicine research center of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. It is a large-scale general hospital which integrates medical service, education and research. It is also one of the technique instruction centers for dubious and acute diseases designated by Ministry of Health. It owns a group of outstanding medical experts, medical educationists and medical research personnel. In addition, the hospital also owns numerous state-of-art facilities which meet international standards, a complete range of special departments, and abundant technology resources. The hospital has reached a quite high level in the areas of health care, research and education, and its synthesized strength has always been in a leading position in domestic medical realm. Currently, the hospital has 170,000 m2 working area, 1800 in-patient beds, and special ICU, CCU, RCU and GCU wards. In February, 2005, the Extension and Reconstruction Project for Peking Union Medical College Hospital Out-Patient and Emergency Department Buildings was approved by the State Council. The total construction area and the total investment of the project reach 220,000 m2 and 2.2 billion yuan, respectively. After the project is completed, the hospital environment where the medical service is delivered to the patients will be improved comprehensively.
The hospital is in possession of a range of national-level key subjects and labs, including Departments of Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Gynecology and Obstetrics, Anesthesiology, Hematology, Cardiology, Rheumatology and Immunology, Dermatology, Pathology, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound Diagnosis.
The hospital also has 37 clinical research centers with distinctive features, covering the areas of rheumatology and immunology, pituitary adenoma neurosurgery, trophoblastic tumor, diabetes, osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, pancreas surgery, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, plastic surgery, allergic disease, vascular surgery, bone joints, scoliosis, obesity, kidney transplantation, artificial cochlea, medical imaging and intervention, and menopause instruction, all of which have played a positive role in the development of education, research and medical service within the hospital.
The hospital currently has 3,742 employees, of which there are 466 people having professor, associate professor or corresponding titles, three academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and Technology, one national “Bethune Medal” winner, as well as 12 national-level and ministerial-level experts with “special contributions”. In addition, more than 100 employees are appointed as directors or standing directors of national grade A or B medical institutes, and chief editors or vice editors of national mainstream magazines.
Peking Union Medical College Hospital is one of the earliest medical institutes in China providing medical services for foreigners. The hospital has set up special foreigner and senior official out-patient department, which carries out a large amount of medical services for senior officials and foreigners. In addition, the hospital has also established special wards, as well as the wards exclusively serving senior officials and foreigners.
Every year, the hospital assumes around 240 research tasks for national, ministerial and provincial-level subjects. Over the past 15 years, our hospital was awarded 22 National Science and Technology Progress Prizes, and more than 100 provincial and ministerial level scientific research prizes. In the recent five years, our hospital also published more than 3550 academic dissertations, both in China and abroad. Moreover, in the last two years, our hospital published 30 high-standard dissertations (impact factor>1.0) in the international magazines and journals collected by the SCI.
