Beijing Tiantan Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University founded on August 23rd, 1956 is located to the southwest of the Tiantan Park. It is a major comprehensive Grade Ⅲ-A General Hospital, focused on neurology. In 1997, Beijing Tiantan Hospital and the Research Center for Neurology attached to the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences were founded with the cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Beijing Health Bureau. Beijing Research Center of Neurosurgery, Beijing Center of Medical Scanning and National Research Office for Prevention and Treatment of Cerebral Vascular Diseases, and Beijing Prevention Office of the Cerebral Vascular Diseases are located in the hospital. Beijing Tiantan Hospital and Beijing Research Center for Neurology is among the three largest research centers of this kind, and the largest center for clinical treatment, teaching and research in neurology in Asia, and is a partner with WHO on neurology training cooperation.
There are 2,115 staff in the hospital and research center, of which there are 1,787 technicians and 313 personnel with the title of senior professional post. The departments are comprehensive, including 33 clinical offices of neurosurgery, neurology, neuroradiology, internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics and so on. It s a comprehensive modern hospital engaged in fields of medical treatment, teaching, research and prevention as a whole. Of the 950 beds, 300 are for neurosurgery, composed of 9 clinical groups of cerebral vascular diseases, intracranial neoplasms, external damages, pediatrics, spinal cord, functional diseases and interventional neuroradiology. It boasts Wang Zhongchen, Zhao Yadu, Luo Shiqi, Zhao Jizong and other world renowned experts in neurology with 4,000 operation cases each year. Under the leadership of Wang Zhongchen, the hospital has carried out several highly difficult operation cases on neurology and has solved 4 difficult world-wide problems on neurology, including the operation on brainstem tumor, surgical treatment for spinal cord tumors, surgical treatment for the giant intracranial aneurysms and the surgical treatment for cerebral arteriovenous malformation. The quality and quantity of operations ranks at a leading international position.
Beijing Tiantan Hospital is equipped with advanced medical equipment and appliances such as gamma knife, operation guidance system, laser, operating microscope, MR, CT,ECT, DSA，linear accelerator, color Doppler B-ultrasound, full-automatic clinical chemistry analyzer and so on. The hospital completely applies the microscopy operation. The new operations synchronous to the advanced international level such as gamma knife treatment, navigated operations, intraventricular endoscopic neurosurgery, and deep microelectrode guided stereo tactic surgery for epilepsy, have improved the overall operation quality.
Beijing Tiantan Hospital has a rational knowledge structure and talent distribution. It has 4 post-doctor education centers, 8 centers for awarding Doctor’s Degree, 10 doctoral supervisor, 16 centers for graduate education, 41 master’s supervisors, and 200 postgraduates, who provide sustainable intellectual support and talent reserve for its sustainable development. In the meantime, it has trained 3,000 professional neurosurgery doctors, which accounts for one third of the total doctors in neurosurgery in China. The hospital owns 6 outstanding experts, 10 admitted to the hundred -thousand project and 21 admitted to the technological stars in Beijing. Academician Wang Zhongchen and Vice Principal Zhao Jizong are respectively Director and the Vice Director of the Chinese Association of Neurology. Principal Huang Jianping is Director of the Chinese Society of Radiation.
Since 1989, the hospital and its research centers have won 263 rewards, of which 3 are international, 26 are national, 27 are provincial, and 82 are municipal. It has published 6,615 papers, of which 373 are about international exchange, and 148 books. It has cooperated with several countries on research projects. The hospital and its research centers are currently carrying out 177 research projects, of which 7 are breakthrough projects of the national “10th Five-Year Plan” project, 14 are the projects sponsored by the National Nature Science Fund, and 3 are the national “863” projects.
