Beijing Tuberculosis and Thoracic Tumor Research Institute is located at the eastern exit of the Beijing Tongzhou speedway and is beside the Tonghui River and the source of the famous Great Canal .The Institute was established in 1955 with the original name of “The Central Tuberculosis Research Institute”. Its present structures are “Beijing Tuberculosis and Thoracic Tumor Research Institute” and “Beijing Thoracic Tumor and Tuberculosis Hospital” .The Institute has some affiliated facilities, i.e. The World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Research and Training on Tuberculosis; The National Tuberculosis Control Center, MOH; National Research Base of Clinical Pharmacology; Research and Advisory Center for Thoracic Tumor of The Chinese Cancer Research Foundation. The Institute had also been assigned as one of the first series of the national doctoral and master degree conferring units.

The plot of the Institute and Hospital occupied an area of 130,OOO square meters with construction about 60,OOO square meters. There are 799 staffs in the Institute including 636 technical professional staffs on research and medical services. There are 27 senior specialists with the title of Researcher or Chief Doctor and 52 Deputy Researchers or Deputy Chief Doctors .A total of 156 specialists above the level of Deputy Researcher or Deputy Chief Doctor had been worked in the Institute in the past 45 years.

The Institute consists of various research departme nts, i.e. Departments of E p idemiology, Microbiological Immunology and Mo lecular Immunology, Cellular Biology, Pharmacology, Patho-logical Anatomy, Chest Diseases, Tho racic S urgery, Orthopaedics, Cl i ni cal Immunology and r Cardio-pulmonary Function, etc. There are also vari ous supplemental departments, i.e. Depar tment of Roentgen logy, R adiotherapy, Anesthesio logy, Clini cal Laboratory, Pharmacy, Refe rence Laboratory, F unctional Laboratory, Information and Library, Communist Party Operation, Admistrative and logistic Supply ,etc. The National Tuberculosis Control Center, MOH , has two wubordinate offices, i.e. Central Office and World Bank Loan Tuberculosis control office.

The Institute and the Hospital undertake the task of research, treatment, disease control and training on tuberculosis and thoracic tumor. The research works were continuously and steadily progressed. The research works on tuberculosis and lung cancer had been emphasixed as the municipal highlighted research items. A Beijing municipal high technology laboratory Lung Cancer Branch Laboratory of Beijing Molecular Biology Laboratory on Tumor has been established in the Institute.

In the past 45 years, 177technical achievements and awards above the bureau level were acquired and 5 items of them got national awards. 1561 reports, 46 books and 19 translated books were published in the past. Four regular journals are edited and published by the Institute.

The Institute and the Hospital combined as an entity forming a famous institute and specialized hospital in the country. The Hospita1 was graded as the Third Tier Grade I Hospita1(the highest tier and grade in the Country).More than 40,000 tuberculosis patients had been admitted and treated in the past 45years and about 20,OOO patients with various tumors were treated since seven decades. More than 6,OOO patients with lung cancer were treated by surgical operation and 45% of them were on middle or late stage. The five years’s survival rate after operation was 35%. The comprehensive treatment of small cell carcinoma and treatment of malignant pleurisy have special characteristic and occupied the domestic leading position.

The Institute and Hospital provide a comprehensive system for diagnosis, differential diagnosis, surgical treatment, chemotherapy, radiotherapy , immunological treatment ,western-traditional combined treatment on both tuberculosis and thoracic tumors. The Hospital was outfitted with modern equipment and instruments for comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic process, e.g. spiral CT, ECT, color ultrasonic machine, anaesthetic intensive care instrument, Cardio-pulmonary exercise test system, fully automatic biochemistry analyzer ,14Mev electric linear accelerator, short distance therapeutic machine ,high pressure oxygen cabin, high performance liquid chromatography, large X-ray machine, semi-automatic ATB, Bactec960, CV200 electronic fibro-bronchoscopy etc. Based on above-mentioned instruments and machines,
the Institute and Hospital can provide comprehensive examinations, diagnosis and treatment for tuberculosis and thoracic tumor.

Recently, achievements were obtained on early diagnosis on tuberculosis and thoracic tumors with sophisticated and new technology concerning oncogene and antioncogene of lung cancer using the technology of molecular biological method as well as the diagnostic technology for tubercle bacilli and the epidemiology of tuberculosis and lung cancer. A total of 81master degrees and 8 doctoral degrees had been conferred to the post-graduated researchers since 1979.A total of 1085 postgraduate health personnel had been trained and 94 training courses on various subjects had been conducted with a total of4,212 participants.

The Institute is continuously carrying out the construction of two kinds of civilization (material and spiritual civilization).The title of “Civilized Unit of the Capital City” conferred to the Institute continuously during the past 14 years since 1984.Three awards of “Advanced Group” and 18 “Advanced individual” or other honorable awards had been conferred by The Ministry of Health and Beijing Municipality.

Under the new circumstance, the Institute and the Hospital will continuously reform the idea of service and go deeply to the health system reformation as well as altering the medical pattern to produce much more qualified personnel ,achievements and efficiency. A modern base of scientific research and medical services with own characteristic and emphasizing will be developed and will contribute much more for people” health.
