Epidemic Situation of This Week (2008,10,13 ¨C 2008,10,19)

I.General Situation of the Epidemics

In the 41st week of 2008 (from 0 a.m. on Oct. 13 to 12 p.m. on Oct. 19), 2,142 cases of 15 notifiable infectious diseases were reported in 18 districts and counties across Beijing, with 2 deaths confirmed (caused by hepatitis B). Among them, there were 969 cases of 10 types of class B infectious diseases, down 12.62£¥ from last week and down 8.24£¥ from the same period of last year. The top five categories of diseases with the highest incidence rates are listed as follows: diarrhea (388 cases), tuberculosis (238 cases), hepatitis B (127 cases), syphilis (91 cases) and gonorrhea (37 cases); 1,173 cases of types from Class C infectious diseases were reported, up 9.42£¥ from last week and down 6.24£¥ from the same period of last year.


II. Analysis of the Major Epidemic Situation


 (1) Diarrhea
This week 388 cases were reported throughout the city, down 25.24% from last week and down 27.61% from the same period of last year. The five districts and counties that reported the most disease cases were Chaoyang, Haidian, Fengtai, Xicheng and Changping, accounting for 56.44% of the total of disease cases. Scattered-living children, retirees, cadres & clerks, students, housework & unemployed people were in the majority of diarrhea patients, accounting for 77.58% of the reported patients.


 (2) Chickenpox
This week, 260 cases of chickenpox were reported, up 42.08% over last week. The five districts and counties that reported the most disease cases were Haidian, Chaoyang, Changping, Shunyi and Fengtai, accounting for 68.46% of the total of disease cases. The infected were mainly pupils and preschool children, who accounted for 78.46% of the reported patients. However, no collective outbreaks were reported.
From Oct. 8¨COct.14, an outbreak of chicken pox occurred in a university in Beijing, with 20 people infected. As of October 19, 28 cases had been reported accumulatively. All the patients are undergoing separate treatment in the wards of university hospital and getting better. So far, there has been no complications and severe cases reported.


¢ó. Important Reminder
According to sources, the weather in Beijing will be cold and windy in the coming days, and the peak season for chicken pox is approaching. Therefore Beijing Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention sincerely reminds all teachers and parents of students at nurseries, kindergartens, secondary and primary schools and universities: Classroom and group activity places should be ventilated frequently by opening windows; close attention should be paid to incidence of chicken pox. Suspected patients must be immediately hospitalized to definitely diagnose illness and follow the medical personnel¡¯s advice during separate treatment. The treatment should continue till all blisters on the skin scab, and students must not be allowed to attend class unless they have received permits from the health care division of a local hospital; organizations and companies which are collectively attacked by chicken pox should implement comprehensive disease control measures adopted by disease prevention and control authorities. The measures for stopping the spread of chicken pox include emergency vaccination, disinfection, ventilation, dissemination of knowledge, etc.
