Summary During the 25th week (June 23 -- June 29, 2008), 4,062 cases of 16 legally defined infectious diseases with 5 cases of death (two cases of hepatitis and one case of AIDS, syphilis and hand-foot-mouth disease respectively) are reported in 18 districts and counties of Beijing Municipality. Among them, 10 categories of Type B Infectious Diseases amounting to 1,515 cases are reported, 5.96% lower than last week and 21.99% lower than the same week of last year. The top 5 categories of diseases with the highest incidence rates are as follows: diarrhea (813 cases), pulmonary tuberculosis (312 cases), hepatitis B (118 cases), syphilis (79 cases) and gonorrhea (46 cases). Six categories of Type C Infectious Diseases amounting to 2,547 cases are reported, 0.71% higher than last week and 21.56% lower than the same week of last year. This week, six categories of Type C Infectious Diseases, namely other infectious diarrhea, hand-foot-mouth disease, epidemic parotitis, measles, acute heamorrhagic conjunctivitis and leprosy, are reported in Beijing, accounting for 62.70% of the total and 21.56% lower than the same period of last year. Among them, hand-foot-mouth disease and leprosy saw a rise in outbreaks, and other infectious diarrhea and measles saw a drop in the number of cases.

(¢ñ) Dengue Fever On June 24, China-Japan Friendship Hospital reported a case of laboratory diagnosed dengue fever. The patient Mr. Tao is 27 years old and lives in Beiyuan Garden, Chaoyang District. He came back from Phuket Island of Thailand on June 16 and was bitten by mosquitoes during his tour there. He started to show symptoms of dengue fever on June 18, and was diagnosed and reported on June 24.

(¢ò) Hand-foot-mouth Disease (HFMD) A total of 931 cases are reported this week, 13.40% higher than last week. The top 5 regions are Haidian District, Fengtai District, Chaoyang District, Daxing District and Tongzhou District, accounting for 72.82% of the total. Those infected are mainly scattered-living children and kindergarten kids. ¡¡¡¡
(¢ó) Diarrhea A total of 813 cases are reported this week, 6.77% lower than last week and 34.17% lower than the same week of last year. The top 5 regions are Chaoyang District, Haidian District, Fengtai District, Changping District and Daxing District, accounting for 59.29% of the total. Outbreaks can be seen in every age group, with infants and young adults reporting the most. ¡¡
¢ó Special Reminder The epidemic situation in Beijing is stable this week, with no cases of major outbreaks reported. According to the number of reported cases of infectious diseases in Beijing over the years, July and August usually see the highest incidences of intestinal infectious diseases. Hence, the Beijing Municipal Health Bureau urges health and disease prevention institutions at all levels to be well prepared and never drop the guard. Health surveillance departments should redouble their efforts in supervision and management of health affairs; disease prevention and treatment institutions at all levels should do a better job at epidemic surveillance while highlighting the surveillance over intestinal infectious diseases, and strictly follow the epidemic reporting system, detect suspected epidemics in a timely manner and minimize the possibility of the outbreak of infectious diseases.
