Epidemic Situation of This Week £¨2008.6.16 ¨C 2008.6.22£©

¢ñ. Summary
This week (June 16 -- June 22, 2008), 3,319 cases of 14 legally defined infectious diseases with 1 case of death (pulmonary tuberculosis) are reported in 18 districts and counties of Beijing Municipality. Among them, 10 categories of Type B Infectious Diseases amounting to 1,611 cases are reported, 3.94£¥higher than last week and 11.53% lower than the same week last year. The top 10 categories of diseases with the highest incidence rates are as follows: dysentery, pulmonary tuberculosis, hepatitis B, syphilis, measles, gonorrhea, scarlet fever, hepatitis C, hepatitis E, and hepatitis (unclassified). Four categories of Type C Infectious Diseases totaling 1,708 cases are reported, 2.58£¥ higher than last week and 20.26% lower than the same week last year.

¢ò. Analysis of the Major Epidemics

Hand-foot-mouth Disease (HFMD)

This week, a total of 821 cases are reported, 2.63£¥ higher than last week. The five districts which reported the most cases are Haidian, Fengtai, Chaoyang, Daxing and Changping, accounting for 70.52 percent of the total amount. Those infected are mainly scattered-living children and kindergarten kids. Up to June 22, there have been a total of 10,453 reported cases in Beijing.

 

Dysentery

This week, a total of 872 cases are reported, 2.68£¥lower than last week and 12.19% lower than the same time last year. Outbreaks can be seen in every age group, with infants and young adults reporting the most cases. Those infected are mainly scattered- living children and kindergarten kids. Up to June 22, there have been a total of 10,159 reported cases in Beijing, an increase of 10.58% compared to the same period last year..

III. Foreign Epidemic Situation

WHO: Indonesia reported 2 cases of bird flu in humans

On June 20, WHO announced that Indonesia broke out two cases of human bird flu.


Case one: a 16-year-old girl in South Jakarta began to show bird flu symptoms on May 7 and was hospitalized on May 12th. She died two days later.
Case two: a 34-year-old woman from Banten began to show bird flu symptoms on May 26 and was hospitalized on June 2, then died on June 3.


So far, Indonesia has reported 135 cases of human bird flu, among them 110 infected people have died.

Russia: Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever

On June 18, local media reported the outbreak of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in Astrakhan, Russia. So far 783 infected patients have been hospitalized.

Singapore: Hand-foot-mouth Disease

Health authorities of Singapore announced on June 17 that the new Hand-foot-mouth Disease cases of the 24th week (June 8 ¨C June 14) amounted to 461, 9.3% lower than last week. Up to June 14, Singapore has reported 15,031 hand-foot-mouth disease cases.


Uganda: cholera
On June 14, health authorities of Uganda announced the outbreak of cholera in Butaleja district. From May 29 to June 9, 36 cholera cases were reported, including 4 deaths.

1. America: Salmonella Infection

On June 18, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the Salmonella epidemic was still spreading. Up to now, 383 people in 30 states have been infected. At least 48 patients have been hospitalized, and one has died.

¢ô Special Reminder

Due to the hot weather, outbreak of intestinal infectious diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery is now at high risk. People must be very careful about food and water, so that they will not be infected by intestinal diseases. Health authorities require all centers for disease control and prevention and hospitals to improve the monitoring system against intestinal infectious diseases, especially cholera, reporting epidemic situation more precisely and taking comprehensive measures of prevention and control to nip every infectious disease in the bud.
