¢ñ. General Situation of the Epidemics
(¢ñ) Summary
This week (from 0 a.m. of May 5, 2008 to 12 p.m. of May 11, 2008), 3,379 cases of 12 kinds of legal infectious diseases with 3 dead cases (2 cases of hepatitis, 1 case of tuberculosis) are reported in 18 districts and counties in the whole city. Among them, there are 1,720 cases of 8 kinds of class B infectious diseases, an increase of 32.92£¥ compared with last week and an increase of 30.70% compared with the same period of last year. The top ten diseases according to the number of reported cases are: diarrhea, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, measles, syphilis, scarlatina, gonorrhea, hepatitis C, hepatitis (not classified) and hepatitis E etc.; 1,659 cases of 4 kinds of class C infectious diseases are reported, an increase of 45.40£¥compared with last week and 14.18% compared with the same period of last year.
¢ò. Analysis of the Major Epidemics
(¢ñ) Rabies
One case of rabies was reported this week. The sufferer is a forty-year-old man living in Jiangcun Village, Liangxiang Town of Fangshan District. His right thumb was bitten by a stray dog two months ago, causing much bleeding on the spot. He squeezed out the blood and bound up the wound which was sterilized with iodine and alcohol, but was not injected rabies vaccination later.
On May 7, the sufferer was suspected as a rabies patient by the village infirmary based on his symptoms of chills, muscle aches, fatigue, fever (38¡æ) and running sweat. The Medical Emergency Center 120 sent him to Beijing Ditan Hospital, where he was hospitalized because the clinical diagnosis was ¡°rabies¡±. During the time in hospital, he was treated with tranquillizer because he was in the excitation phase. On May 10, he was dead.
(¢ò) Measles This week, a total of 113 cases of measles are reported, a decrease of 1.74% compared with last week and 22.60% compared with the same period of last year. Those infected are mainly infants and youths and adults, whose occupation varies from scattered-living children, domestic helpers, cadre and staff, students, business service persons and the unemployed.
Up to May 11, there have been a total of 1,026 reported cases in Beijing, down 25% over last year.
(¢ó) Chickenpox
Some 547 cases of chickenpox are reported this week, up 25.75£¥ over last week and 41.34% over last year. The professional population affected is mainly students, children keepers and scatter-living children.
Up to May 11, there have been a total of 6,587 reported cases, up 16.92% over last year.
III. Foreign Epidemic Situation
(¢ñ) Mongolia: hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases up to 198
Since May 8, hand foot and mouth disease broke out in Mongolia. Some 105 hand foot and mouth disease cases were newly reported on May 11. Up to now, there have been a total of 198 reported cases in 6 provinces and cities of Mongolia, all of whom are children except 2 adults.
(¢ò) South Korea: one Case of Bird Flu Epidemic On May 11, South Korean Department of Agriculture announced another case of bird flue occurring in Chollanam-do District, where 500,000 poultry were killed.¡¡
(¢ó) Canada: group suffered an unknown disease On May 9, 10 people in Canada suffered an unknown disease, with 1 dead case. All of the sufferers showed a symptom similar to influenza. The disease was found in a train of Canadian Railway carrying 264 passengers, which is being quarantined in the South of Ontario now. Canadian experts announced that the dead person, who was proved to have not suffered any infectious disease, had no connection with this unknown epidemic, of which the specific etiologies are being investigated.
