Epidemic Situation of This Week£¨2008.4.28 ¨C 5.4)

¢ñ. General Situation of the Epidemics
This week (from April 28, 2008 to May 4, 2008), 2,435 cases of 17 kinds of legal infectious diseases with 4 dead cases (3 cases of hepatitis, 1 case of rabies) are reported in 18 districts and counties in the whole city. Among them, there are 1,294 cases of 12 kinds of class B infectious diseases, a decrease of 1.97£¥ compared with last week and an increase of  42.35% compared with the same period of last year. The top ten diseases according to the number of reported cases are: diarrhea, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, measles, scarlatina, syphilis, hepatitis C, gonorrhea, hepatitis (not classified) and hepatitis E etc.; 1,141 cases of five kinds of class C infectious diseases are reported, an increase of 15.25£¥compared with last week and 5.45% compared with the same period of last year.


¢ò. Analysis of the Major Epidemics

(¢ñ) Measles

This week, a total of 115 cases of measles are reported, a decrease of 14.81% compared with last week and 6.50% compared with the same period of last year. 75.65% of the total cases broke out in five districts including Chaoyang, Fengtai, Daxing, Haidian, and Changping. Those infected are mainly infants and youths and adults aged between 15 and 39, whose occupation varies from scattered-living children, domestic helpers,  workers including immigrant ones, cadre and staff, students, business service persons and the unemployed.
Up to May 4, there have been a total of 930 reported cases in Beijing, down 25.12% over last year.


(¢ò) Chickenpox
This week, a total of 435 cases of chickenpox are reported, up 21.51£¥ over last week and up 49.48£¥ over last year. The most severely affected districts are Fengtai, Chaoyang, Haidian, Changping and Daxing, with 60.46% of the total cases. The professional population affected is mainly students, children at kindergarten, infants at nurseries£¬and scattered-living children.

Up to May 4, the city has reported a total of 6,045 cases of chickenpox, up 15.27£¥ over the same period of last year.


III. Foreign Epidemic Situation
(¢ñ) Indonesia: One Case of Bird Flu Epidemic
On April 30, Indonesian Health Department announced another case of bird flue, a three-year-old boy, who lives in Middle Java Province. He has been in hospital since April 21, four days after the symptoms showed up. The boy was dead on April 23. He had contact with sick poultry.

Up to now, there have been a total of133 reported cases, with108 killed.

 

(¢ò) USA: measles

On May 2, Center for Disease Control and Prevention of America announced that the most severe measles broke out in America since 2001, with 72 cases reported in 10 states, at least 14 of whom were sent to hospital and no dead case was reported.

 

 (III) Nepal: cholera Epidemic

On May 2, Nepalese media reported that cholera was found in western Nepal----Kalikot, where at least 6 people died of this disease last week.

 (¢ô) Singapore: 34 child care centers closed to prevent infection of hand foot and mouth disease (HFMD)  
 On April 30, Singapore media reported that some 1,466 hand foot and mouth disease cases were found during April 20 and April 25 in Singapore, an increase of 18% over last week. This year, the total reported cases of this disease amount to 9,000.
Health Department of Singapore promulgated a series of strict regulations, which state that all those child care centers must close provided that 13 cases of hand foot and mouth disease are detected within 15 days or 18% or more of the enrolled children are infected with this disease, instead of making decision based on the evaluation of Health Department. Up to now, 34 child care and pre-school education centers have closed.


(¢õ) India: group suffered fever in two districts

On May 3, 109 cases of fever were reported in the Nadilak village of Bishalgarh District and 73 cases in Mohanpur, west of Tripura, by Indian media. The people in these two districts did not contact with sick poultry. Now Indian health departments are diagnosing these two epidemic cases.


¢ô.Key Notes
1. In accordance with the relevant requirements of China's Health Department, ¡°hand foot and mouth disease¡± has been specified as a class C infectious diseases in the Chinese Law of Infectious Disease Control and Prevention. Therefore, health and epidemic prevention institutions at all levels and of all kinds, should strengthen the information report and control of ¡°hand foot and mouth disease¡± according to Chinese Law of Infectious Disease Control and Prevention and Regulations on the Report and Control of Infectious Diseases.

2. Since the April, the cases of hand foot and mouth disease in Beijing have been on the rise. The analysis of the trend and regularity of this disease shows that the cases will still increase in the following months. The possibility that the local outbreak of epidemic mainly in the child care institutions will still exist. Health and epidemic prevention institutions in all districts and counties should


1)follow up and implement strictly the hand foot and mouth disease prevention and control measures and intensify the epidemic prevention guidance to the child care centers and schools within the jurisdiction,


2) carry out morning-noon inspection system carefully,


3) control the pathogen strictly in the child care centers and schools where there are hand foot and mouth disease cases,


4) strengthen the propaganda of the prevention knowledge of this disease for enhancing parents' and teachers' awareness of prevention,


5) detect, isolate, report and treat the infected as early as possible for preventing further infection and spreading of the disease.
