3. Prior Notice

There has been an increase in the number of reported cases of infectious diseases this weekin the city. But the overall epidemic situation is stable.
According to the statistics of Beijing Flu Supervision Daily Newspaper, by January 16, 2006, a total of 27593 visits by both hospital outpatients and emergency room patients had been reported in 67 influenza monitoring hospitals around the city. Thereinto, 1011 cases suffered from influenza-like illnesses, accounting for 3.66% of the total.

The monitoring data showed that the number of influenza-like cases in Beijing is currently decreasing compared with the peak period last week, but the city is still within a high-occurrence period of influenza. Beijing Health Bureau demands that health care departments at all levels should further strengthen the monitoring of influenza-like illnesses, detecting and reporting of the situation of flu epidemics. In addition, relevant agencies should also seriously organize and carry out education activities on respiratory diseases prevention and control for the public.

Moreover, cases of Norwalk Virus (NV) have been reported in Beijing area. So far, norovirus has only been found in some scattered individual patients, who suffer from infectious diarrhea caused by fecal-oral transmission. Therefore, patients should timely seek for medical services once suffering from fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Meanwhile, people should also pay more attention to food sanitation and diet safety, for example, food should be hygienic, all raw seafood should be cooked before eating and hands should be washed before having meals. Health care departments at all levels should strengthen the supervision and remind  residents of eating seafood cautiously, and thus to prevent the spread and prevalence of Norwalk Virus in our city.
